About this Package

A volunteer experience with the Centre for Integrated Community Development (CICD-Uganda) at the grassroots level in Buhweju District is an immersive engagement focused on sustainable, community-driven projects. Volunteers work directly with local residents, including vulnerable groups like children and youth, women and the elderly, to address community-identified needs. Key focus areas 1. Empowering local communities: CICD's projects are designed to be participatory and collaborative, meaning volunteers work with locals, not for them. This approach helps build local capacity and ensures projects are sustainable in remote district. 2. Eco-tourism and conservation: Volunteers can get involved with eco-tourism initiatives, which promote the district's natural beauty and culture while supporting community-based tour guides. Activities include tree planting and hiking in Buhweju's "thousand hills and valleys". 3. Livelihood development: Volunteers may support efforts to improve livelihoods, such as helping women's groups create and market handicrafts like baskets and pots. This helps community members diversify their income. 4. Social and community support: Projects may involve creating awareness on various social issues, such as human rights and gender-based violence, as well as extending social support to vulnerable populations. 5. Community ambassadorship: CICD has a program for "Community Ambassadors"-local volunteers who serve as influential change agents. International volunteers would likely work alongside these ambassadors and the CICD team.
