About this Package
We are looking for self-motivated, humble, and resourceful volunteers who are ready to learn as much as they contribute. Apply to join the Biiso Community Home and help build a resilient future in Buliisa Duration: 1 to 6 Months (Flexible Placements) Base: Biiso Community Home, Buliisa District, Uganda (Western Rift Valley/Lake Albert Region) Go Beyond Tourism. Join the Movement for Resilience. Are you a global citizen seeking a volunteer experience that is deeply ethical, directly impactful, and removes the "middle-man"? The Buliisa region, nestled between the dramatic Rift Valley Escarpment and the vast Lake Albert, is a place of rich culture, stunning biodiversity, and complex development challenges, including the rapid growth of the oil industry. The Rift Valley Resilience Program offers an authentic, community-led immersion. You won't be observing from the sidelines; you will live, work, and share skills directly with the Bagungu and Alur communities. Your stay at the Biiso Community Home, a 100% community-managed social enterprise, ensures every dollar supports local staff and sustainable development. This is your chance to trade the tourist trail for the Salt Trail, contributing your expertise where it matters most: strengthening local livelihoods against the currents of change. Placement Streams (Focus Areas) We seek dedicated volunteers (minimum 1 month commitment) with skills and a passion for ethical collaboration. Placements are tailored to your professional background and the community's real-time needs. The Authentic Community Immersion (Your Home Base) • Accommodation: You will live at the Biiso Community Home, staying in safe, community-run facilities. This provides a constant link to the community and ensures all your accommodation fees are reinvested locally. • Cultural Exchange: Unlike large NGOs, you will be truly immersed. Learn basic Runyoro (Lugungu), participate in traditional activities like fetching water, preparing local cuisine (Matoke, Posho, Fish), and sharing stories with community elders. • Ethical Commitment: We operate on the principle of solidarity, not charity. Your role is to share skills and support local leaders, ensuring projects are sustainable and community-owned long after your departure. Logistical & Personal Growth Benefits • Mentorship: Receive in-depth cultural orientation upon arrival and have a dedicated local community contact for ongoing support and safety. • Exploration: Utilize your weekends for ethical travel on the "Oil Rift Valley & Salt Trail," visiting the Kibiro Salt Gardens (UNESCO Tentative Site), exploring the Rift Valley Escarpment, or taking a safari to nearby Murchison Falls National Park. • CV Enhancement: Gain invaluable, verifiable experience in grassroots international development, cross-cultural communication, and resilience building in a region navigating rapid change (oil/gas development). • Duration Flexibility: Choose a placement that fits your life—from one month of intensive contribution to a six-month deep dive, allowing for maximum impact and personal growth.
