Kisoro Volcanic Coffee Farm Experience; From Bean to Cup
About this Experience
Learn the story and origin of coffee growing during this coffee farm experience We guide you from the coffee plantation field through all processing stages up to freshly brewed cup of coffee enjoyed in our compound with beautiful mountain view of Mgahinga ranges. Meet Peter Helera, the owner of this coffee farm: „I started Arabica coffee plantation in 1996. Having had years of experience with coffee marketing, purchasing coffee from Rwanda and Congo and selling it to coffee factories in Kampala, I decided to start coffee farming on my home land near Kisoro and produce my own coffee as it appeared more profitable and meaningful. Initially I planted 200 coffee seedlings and up today I have increased the number to 1000 trees. After years of getting experience of coffee farming and processing I started encouraging other farmers in my local area to plant coffee in order to increase on local production to get reasonable price for our produce and improve on our livelihood and rural development. Kisoro district being in Kigezi region has fertile volcanic soil, ideal attitude and moderate climate for coffee farming. Our region has been proved to be producing one of the first-rate coffee on the international market. Well-known organizations have shown their interest in forming collaborative alliance with Kigezi coffee farmers because of its rich flavor, good quality and aroma (e.x Nucafé, Urthcafé). In 2009 we learnt about organic farming and we found this practice effective, environmental friendly and healthy. Turning into organic farming furthmore improved the quality of our production, lowered the costs and helped us to protect our coffee from diseases like coffee leaf lust or coffee berry disease. I feel lucky that all the time I have been accompanied and helped by my wonderful wife Elizabeth and all my seven children who are now adult. Together we could develop family coffee farm and community cooperation up to nowadays level.“ Guided Coffee Farm and Village Tour: Our team of local guides will meet you at our home stay reception where you will be welcomed and given a detailed briefing about the entire tour on what to expect.
