Hosted by Red Rocks Initiatives In Rwanda, a meal is never just food—it is an act of communal love and a celebration of the fertile volcanic soil. The Red Rocks Community Cooking Experience takes you beyond the dining table and into the heart of the "Umulyango" (family) hearth. Here, you aren’t just a student; you are a guest of a vibrant women’s cooperative, joining a legacy of flavor that has been perfected over centuries. The Experience: Slow Food, Deep Roots • The Living Pantry: Start by understanding the ingredients that define the Rwandan highland diet. You’ll learn about the different varieties of "Irish" potatoes, climbing beans, and the versatile plantains (Ibitoke) that form the backbone of local nutrition. • Ancestral Techniques: Forget modern appliances. You will experience the patience and skill of traditional cooking, using clay pots over three-stone fires. Learn how to control the heat with wood and charcoal to achieve that authentic, smoky infusion. • The Women’s Circle: Cook alongside the matriarchs of the community. As you peel, chop, and stir, you’ll share stories and laughter, gaining a rare window into the social role of the kitchen as a place of female empowerment and storytelling. • A Feast of Connection: The highlight of the day is the shared meal. Sit together in the traditional way to savor your creations, understanding why in Rwanda, the most important ingredient is always the people you share it with. At a Glance: The CBT Advantage Culinary Preservation: Your participation helps keep traditional recipes alive in an era of globalized fast food. Direct Empowerment: The women who lead the class receive 100% of the instruction fees, supporting their families and local cooperatives. Sustainable Living: Learn the art of "Zero-Waste" cooking, where every peel and scrap has a purpose in the village ecosystem. Know Before You Go Dress for the Hearth: You’ll be working with wood fires and charcoal; wear comfortable, casual clothes. Hands-On Participation: Be prepared to get involved! Whether it's pounding cassava in a mortar or stirring a heavy pot, the "secret ingredient" is your own effort.
