Hosted by Red Rocks Initiatives In Rwanda, a basket is never just a container; it is a woven vessel of peace, a symbol of reconciliation, and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. This Basket Weaving Workshop at Red Rocks invites you to sit within the "Circle of Sisters"—the local artisan cooperatives of Nkotsi Village—to learn an art form that helped knit a nation back together. The Experience: Meditative Artistry • The Language of Patterns: Discover the hidden meanings behind the geometric designs. From the Agaseke (Peace Basket) with its distinctive pointed lid to patterns representing the peaks of the Virunga Volcanoes, you will learn how Rwandan women "write" their history through their needles. • From Earth to Fiber: Trace the journey of the materials. Learn how local sisal fibers are harvested, hand-extracted, and dyed using natural pigments derived from roots, bark, and volcanic soil. • The Meditative Rhythm: Experience the therapeutic "slow craft" of weaving. As your hands master the coiling technique, you’ll find yourself entering a state of mindfulness, surrounded by the soft chatter and laughter of the weavers. • Economic Empowerment: Engage with the artisans to hear how this craft has transformed their lives. For many women in the community, these baskets are a path to financial independence, education for their children, and a platform for social leadership. At a Glance: The CBT Advantage Social Reconciliation: Weaving cooperatives were among the first spaces where Rwandan women reunited to heal and work together post-1994. Direct Income: 100% of your workshop fee and any additional purchases go directly to the artisan cooperative. Sustainable Fashion: Learn a 100% biodegradable craft that uses zero electricity and supports local biodiversity. Know Before You Go Patience is the Tool: Basket weaving is an exercise in patience. Your first few rows might be slow, but the goal is the connection, not the speed! A Gift of Peace: These baskets are traditionally given to friends and family to mark new beginnings—your handmade keepsake will carry that spirit back home with you.
