This Community tour is designed to showcase the diverse human heritage co-existing with the wildlife and dramatic landscapes of Kasese, from the rift valley floor to the Rwenzori foothills. It offers a hands-on and authentic connection with five unique community livelihoods. The Experience and its Encounters: Kikorongo/Kahendero (Fishing Village) Fishermen on Lake George; The Life of a Fisherman: Early morning or late afternoon visit to a landing site like Kahendero or a similar spot on Lake George. Encounters: Observing traditional fishing techniques, mending nets, learning about fish smoking/preserving, and the economic structure of the fishing community. Opportunity to purchase fresh fish for dinner. Rwenzori Foothills (Agricultural Village): Bakonzono People 'Keepers of the Mountains' Farming Life: A visit to a village like Kahokya. Encounters: Participating in traditional cocoa, cotton or vanilla processing, learning about the cultivation of staple crops (like cassava), visiting a blacksmith or traditional healer to understand local medicine and tools, and listening to Bakonzo folklore and legends of the Rwenzori Mountains. Basongora Cattle Keepers Village: Basongora Pastoralists Pastoralist Traditions: A visit to a grazing area or homestead near the park's plains. Encounters: Learning about their indigenous cattle breeds (Ankole cows), witnessing the milking process, understanding the cultural significance of cattle, observing their unique mobile shelters, and experiencing a traditional Basongora welcome dance and songs centered around cattle. Katwe (Salt Mining Village) Salt Miners: The Ancient Salt Industry: A tour of the Lake Katwe Salt Mines. Encounters: Walking the mud-pathways to see the unique, traditional, and rigorous process of salt harvesting and purification by hand from individual salt pans. Understanding the different types of salt and their uses (table, livestock, industrial). Economic and social history of the over 700-year-old salt trade. Kasese City Tour Urban Kasese Residents: The Regional Hub: A visit to the bustling market, and a drive-by of key historical sites. Encounters: Observing local market commerce, seeing the impact of historical industries like the Kilembe Copper Mines, and visiting the Equator landmark in Kasese, a unique spot where the equator meets the 'Mountains of the Moon' backdrop. This tour program balances active cultural learning with travel time, providing a deep dive into the unique blend of communities that define the Kasese region.
What you'll do
Arrival from Entebbe
Day 1
Arrive at Kasese or drive from Kampala/Entebbe. Check-in to Kikorongo Rest Camp. Evening: Enjoy a local dinner and a brief cultural performance or storytelling session by the Kikorongo Women's Community at the camp, introducing the region's spirit.
Day 1: Mountains & Plains: Bakonzo Agriculture and Basongora Cattle
Day 2
Morning (Rwenzori Foothills): Drive to the Rwenzori foothills village (Kahokya village). Bakonzo Village Experience: Learn about the community's agricultural life (cocoa/vanilla farming), meet the traditional blacksmith and storyteller. Participate in a brief cultural dance lesson. Afternoon (Plains): Drive to a Basongora Cattle Keepers Village (near the plains). Pastoralist Encounter: Spend time at a traditional kraal (cattle enclosure), learn about their Ankole cattle, and observe milking/herding practices. Enjoy cultural songs and stories of the Basongora.
Day 2: Water & Salt: Fishing and Mining Community
Day 3
Morning (Fishing Village): Very early start to visit a Lake George Fishing Village (e.g., Kahendero). Fisherman's Life: Observe the return of the fishing boats, the sorting and selling of the catch, and the process of preservation (e.g., smoking fish). Interact with local community members. Afternoon (Salt Lake): Travel to the Katwe Salt Mines. Salt Mining Tour: Guided walk on the salt lake to witness the ancient, labor-intensive process of salt extraction from the pans. Learn about the lake's ecology and history. Visit the nearby bird sanctuary lake (Lake Munyanyange).
Day 3: Kasese City & Departure Preparation

Morning (City Tour): Kasese City Exploration: Visit the bustling Kasese Central Market for an urban cultural encounter. Drive past the historical Kilembe Mines area and visit the Equator Monument for photos and geological context. Afternoon (Leisure/Camp): Return to Kikorongo Rest Camp for leisure. Option for a guided nature walk around the camp or purchase crafts from the local community groups. Evening: Farewell dinner at the camp, perhaps featuring local cuisine from the villages visited.

Enjoy breakfast and give in your community contribution (if any). Transfer out of Kasese (e.g., to Kasese Airstrip, or start the drive back to Kampala/another destination).
