Deep within the rolling hills of Masha, Isingiro, on the doorstep of Lake Mburo National Park, lies an authentic cultural sanctuary managed by Georgina Biraro. This is not a commercial gallery, but a living village home where the "Pearl Accord" is practiced in its purest form—ensuring the community owns, manages, and benefits from every visitor’s curiosity. The Orugyegye: The Sacred Milk Shrine At the heart of Georgina’s home is the Orugyegye, an elevated, beautifully crafted platform or "showroom" dedicated to the preservation of milk and the tools of the herdsman. In Ankole culture, the Orugyegye is a symbol of a well-managed household and a tribute to the Cow (Ente). Georgina personally guides you through the intricate collection of traditional tools: • Ebyanzi: Hand-carved wooden milk pots, smoked to a deep black finish with special herbs to preserve the milk. • Enkuyo: Traditional fly-whisks used by herdsmen while tending to the cattle. • Ebishaabo: Large, ornate gourds used for churning milk into ghee (Amashiita). • Ebirere: Small calabashes used for drinking fermented milk (Bireere). • Engata: Woven rings made of fiber that act as stabilizers for the Ebyanzi pots. • Omuhoro & Amacumu: Traditional curved knives and spears used for protecting the herd and clearing grazing paths. • Enshwa: Wooden covers for the milk pots, often intricately woven with papyrus or fiber. The High Ground: Hiking & The Herd The experience extends beyond the artifacts. Georgina leads a two-hour immersive hike through her expansive farm. As you ascend, you will: 1. Interact with the Herdsmen: Meet the keepers of the flame who share the "cattle language," demonstrating the whistling and rhythmic calls used to lead the herd. 2. Among the Giants: Get up close with the Long-horned Ankole Cows, observing their majestic horns and gentle nature in their natural habitat. 3. The Scenic Reward: Reach the farm's summit for a breathtaking, panoramic view of Lake Mburo National Park, where the savannah meets the sky. This experience is part of a community-led effort to preserve the Ankole heritage. By visiting, you are a direct partner in the Pearl Accord, ensuring that Georgina and her neighboring farmers remain the primary guardians of this ancient lifestyle.
