Nestled at the lush foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, Karangura Eco-Camp offers a transformative one-day immersion for travelers seeking more than just a view. This experience is designed for those transitioning from the vast savannahs of Queen Elizabeth, the primate corridors of Kibale, or the rugged peaks of the Rwenzoris who wish to connect deeply with the people of the mountains. Tourism with a Purpose: Every activity at Karangura is governed by the 70/20 Pearl Accord. This community-led model ensures that 70% of your tour cost stays directly with the local practitioners—the guides, the craftswomen, and the farmers—while 20% is funneled into a community fund. By participating, you are not just a spectator; you are a partner in addressing critical challenges like school dropout rates and early marriage. Your visit provides the sustainable livelihoods necessary to keep children in school and out of stone quarries. The Welcoming (Wasingyayo) & Community Briefing Your day begins with a warm Wasingyayo (Welcome) from the camp team. You will be introduced to the core mission of the social enterprise, learning how your presence helps sponsor children at Nyarukamba and Mount Gessi primary schools. Hillside Heritage Hike Embark on a guided walk through the community-managed trails. Unlike traditional mountain trekking, this is an "immersion hike." You will: • Meet the Farmers: Visit coffee and vanilla gardens at the foothills. • The Stone Excavation Story: Understand the local landscape and the socio-economic challenges that the camp is working to solve through sustainable alternatives. Traditional Skills & Craft Workshop Engage in a hands-on session with the local women’s groups. This is a vital part of the camp's income-generating training. • Basketry & Pottery: Learn the intricate patterns of the Rwenzori region. • Social Impact Focus: Observe or participate in the making of reusable sanitary pads, a key initiative that keeps adolescent girls in school. Culinary Immersion: From Garden to Table Join a local family in preparing a traditional meal. You will learn to cook using local ingredients and traditional methods, experiencing the authentic flavors of the mountain communities. Cultural Celebration & Drama The afternoon features a performance by the community drama groups. These groups are more than just entertainment; they are a platform for advocacy, using music and dance to sensitize the community about the importance of education and the dangers of early marriage.
