Unlearn the Modern. Reclaim the Human. "Stop looking at Africa through a lens. Start listening to it through a legacy. Most tours show you what Africa looks like; The Living Library shows you how Africa thinks and acts. Come attend the oldest university on Earth—the community." Trip Overview: The Living Library is a multi-day, circuit-based immersion program. It moves away from "monuments and museums" and focuses on living systems—health, finance, leadership, and ecology—taught by the elders and practitioners who hold this knowledge. In the modern era, we are taught that progress only comes from laboratories, silicon chips, and skyscrapers. But in the heart of Africa—and specifically within the vibrant cultures of Uganda—a different kind of genius has flourished for millennia. It is called Indigenous Knowledge (IK): a holistic, time-tested system of living that prioritizes community, resilience, and harmony with the Earth. Uganda is often called a "cultural melting pot," and for good reason. With over 50 distinct ethnic groups, the country is a living laboratory of Indigenous Knowledge (IK). Each tribe has developed a specialized "curriculum" of local wisdom to thrive in its specific environment. Join the Classroom with Kitara Foundation Nothing about Africa’s survival is a coincidence. It is the result of centuries of passed-down wisdom. The world is at a crossroads, and we believe the answers are right here in our communities. The Kitara Foundation is opening its doors. We invite international travelers, students, and leaders to come to Uganda—not just to visit, but to learn. Experience our homestays, witness our traditions, and take home the local wisdom that the world so desperately needs. Volume I: The Science of Life • Location: Hoima (Bunyoro-Kitara) and Tooro. • The Experience: The Bunyoro Healing Trail: Visit traditional birth attendants and herbalists. Learn about the 1879 C-section legacy and the botanical antiseptics used in the "Forest Pharmacy." o Banana Culture Workshop: Join the Tooro household to learn the "Zero-Waste" banana lifecycle—from Banana with ferinda cooking to Banana wine and gin processing. Volume II: The Walking Bank Location: Mbarara/Kiruhura (Ankole Region). • The Experience: Herdsman for a Day: Wake up at dawn with a Munyankole herdsman. Learn the "Indigenous Economics" of cattle—how to track genetics and health without technology. o Wealth Dialogue: An evening by the fire discussing how cattle serve as a social safety net, far more stable than a stock market. Volume III: Governance & The Gorilla Spirit (Mountain Regions) • Location: Rwenzori Foothills & Bwindi. • The Experience: Leadership Trek: Hike with Bakonzo elders to learn "Mountain Stewardship." Understand the Totem system and how spiritual "taboos" are actually sophisticated environmental conservation laws. o The Strategy Session: A workshop on the "Gorilla Instinct"—lessons in resilience, quiet movement, and community protection. Core Features • The "Library Card" (Passport): Every guest receives a hand-crafted journal (the Library Card). In each village, they receive a "stamp" from an elder and a space to write the specific piece of wisdom they are carrying home. • The 70/20 Pearl Accord Model: Guests are told exactly where their money goes—70% directly to the practitioners (the healers, herdsmen, and elders) and 20% into a community development fund for local schools or health centers. • Homestay-First Accommodation: No luxury hotels. Travelers stay in vetted, high-quality community homestays to ensure the "Living Library" experience continues through dinner conversations and shared chores. • Engagement: Guests are paired with a "Cultural Translator" from the foundation to ensure the nuances of the local languages and wisdom are fully captured.
