Into the Heart of the Albertine Rift: Descending from Fort Portal into the misty Semuliki Valley, the landscape opens into the palm-dotted savannas of Ntoroko District—homeland of the Batuku (Abatuku) pastoralists. Organized by the Kitara Foundation for Sustainable Tourism, this immersive journey offers a rare, authentic look at a region where cultural heritage and rift valley ecology thrive side by side. Pastoral Heritage: Ankole Cattle & The Borassus Palm In Rwebisengo, guests enter a traditional Batuku homestead surrounded by the soft rustle of palm fronds and grazing herds. Walking with local herdsmen reveals the profound cultural bond with Ankole Long-horned Cattle. Guests learn the distinct poetry, whistles, and naming systems used to guide individual cows based on horn shape and coat patterns. Tapping the "Tree of Life" (Obugeme) Towering above the pastures, the African fan palm (Borassus aethiopum) provides vital sustenance and raw materials: • Sap Tapping & Tasting: Watch experienced tappers scale smooth trunks to harvest sweet palm sap. Sample both fresh toddy and traditionally fermented Obugeme wine. • Artisanal Crafting: Join local women processing durable palm leaves into hand-woven mats, baskets, and fans. • Herdsman Feast: Enjoy a farm-side lunch featuring palm pulp and shoot preparations alongside traditional dairy delicacies like eshabwe (cultured butter). Lake Albert Fishing Encounters Late in the afternoon, the savanna transitions into the vibrant shorelines of Lake Albert at Ntoroko landing site. Visitors connect directly with local fishermen, observing net-mending, boat preparation, and ancestral smoking and drying techniques used for Nile perch and tilapia—an unscripted glimpse into aquatic livelihoods along Uganda’s western border. Hearth Stories & Farewell As night falls over the rift valley, guests settle into a farm homestay for the evening milking experience. Around the central campfire (ekyoto), hosts share Batuku legends, regional history, and traditional music under the stars. The journey concludes the following morning with a farewell breakfast of fresh milk tea, roasted palm seeds, and local staples before the return trip to Fort Portal. Alignment with the Pearl Accord This experience directly fulfills the core pillars of Uganda's Pearl Accord: • Direct Economic Benefit: Tour revenues flow straight to host families, tappers, craftswomen, and fishing guides. • Cultural Integrity: Pastoral and craft traditions are shared authentically on the community’s own terms. • Environmental Stewardship: Demonstrating the economic value of living Borassus palms incentivizes community-led conservation along the Toro-Semliki corridor.
