The Bafumbira are an indigenous ethnic group located in Uganda’s Kisoro District, a region in the country’s southwestern highlands, where Uganda shares borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The area is part of the greater Virunga volcanic landscape, characterized by terraced hills and dramatic mountain ranges, including the iconic peaks of Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabinyo. Historically, the Bafumbira are believed to have migrated to the region from Rwanda centuries ago. They share linguistic and cultural ties with the Banyarwanda while maintaining unique traditions that set them apart. The proximity to the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo has fostered cultural cross-pollination, enriching their customs while retaining a distinct sense of identity. This cultural-community expendition enables you to experience the hands-on dive into the heritage of the Bafumbira people, the dominant community in the Kisoro region The Community Experience: Bafumbira Cultural Immersion • Location: A Bafumbira village or community center near Kisoro town, such as a designated Mabungo location.
