Ibanga Community Escape, Queen Elizabeth National Park

About this Experience

Located in the heart of Bunyaruguru, Rubirizi, Ibanga is a boutique sanctuary founded by three local sisters. It is designed for the traveler who seeks restoration through connection—not just to the landscape, but to the people who have called this volcanic crater region home for centuries. The Sanctuary: Intimate & Nature-Inspired Your base is an exclusive village with the panaromic views of Kyambura Gorge, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Rwenzori Mountains. Nestled on the escarpment with panoramic views of dormant craters like Kacuuba and Kakunyu, the experience set for a maximum of twelve guests, Ibanga prioritizes 70% direct local employment, ensuring that the artisans, staff, and builders are all from the surrounding Bunyaruguru villages. The Encounter: Crater Lakes & Sacred Forests; Ibanga serves as the gateway to the "Land of 52 Craters." Rather than a standard tour, you engage in expert-led exploration. Interact with farmers in the village, meet fishermen on the lakes, listen to oral stories and enjoy cultural entertainment. Trek to the Twin Lakes (Kyasanduka and Murambi) or discover the "transparent lake" hidden deep within the local forest. Every guided walk is led by a community member. Under the Pearl Accord, your trekking fees support Community-Based Tourism Organizations (CBTOs), ensuring that 20% of the proceeds fund the conservation of these fragile volcanic ecosystems. The Heritage: Banyaruguru & Banyankole Culture Experience the vibrant intersection of pastoralist and agricultural traditions unique to this region. Sundowner Farm Experience: Join local herders for an afternoon walk with cows and goats, gaining a hands-on glimpse into the ancient Banyankole culture. Evening Fireside: As night falls, the garden transforms into a space for Kinyaruguru Traditional Dance and storytelling, paired with a fireplace BBQ and a taste of local craft brews. Performers and storytellers receive 70% of the cultural fee directly, preserving oral histories by making them a viable modern livelihood. The Connection: Queen Elizabeth National Park Boundary Located just 10km from the park, Ibanga offers a strategic "outside-in" approach to wildlife. By visiting Ibanga rather than inside the park, you ensure your tourism dollars bypass large corporate chains and flow directly into the Kichwamba community. A portion of every stay contributes to the 20% Community Investment Fund, which supports local initiatives like House of Love Africa, providing guests with tangible opportunities to volunteer or support non-profit social projects. The Philosophy: Restoration Through Equity: At Ibanga, your "escape" is a catalyst for regional growth. It is a private haven of unmatched beauty designed for peace, where the rustling leaves and morning coffee are seasoned with the knowledge that your presence is an act of stewardship. Reconnect with nature. Restore a community. Your escape awaits.
