About this Experience
Uganda is popularly known for its tasty fast street food - The Ugandan Rolex. To truly appreciate the significance of the Uganda Rolex, one must first understand its origins. Contrary to its namesake, the Rolex has no association with the luxury timepiece but rather derives its name from a playful fusion of "rolled" and "eggs," with a funny local saying (In Uganda we Eat Rolex, we don't wear Rolex). Born on the bustling streets of Uganda, this humble snack has humble beginnings, often crafted by roadside vendors using makeshift griddles and fresh ingredients sourced from local markets. Its roots can be traced back to the 2000s, where it emerged as a convenient and affordable meal option for busy Ugandans on the go. Despite its modest beginnings, the Rolex soon captured the hearts and palates of the nation, evolving from a simple street food into a culinary icon. Today it is one of the most searched Ugandan foods in the world, and yet most visitors to Kampala never actually eat one made by the vendor who has been perfecting it for 15 years on the same corner. While on this guided tour led by a local female guide, you will also immerse yourself with the day to day street life of Kampala, a city known for its lively markets in the downtown. This is not a sanitized food tour. You move through the city the way locals do, stopping where the crowds are, eating what they eat, and talking to the people behind the food. Here you can witness the diverse range of products being sold, from crafts and clothing to fresh produce. We sample some of the delicious fresh fruits, taste a Kikomando, and other Ugandan specialties on our "Street Food Delights" tour. By the end you will have eaten better, spent less, and seen more of the real Kampala than anyone staying in your hotel.
