About this Experience
Most people pass through the Fort Portal region on their way to chimpanzee trekking and never slow down long enough to take it all in. This experience is the antidote to that. The Guided Crater Lakes Canoeing and Vanilla Farm Experience takes place on Lake Mwamba, a calm and strikingly beautiful crater lake near Kibale National Park, where you paddle through still waters in a traditional dugout canoe guided by someone who grew up on this lake and knows every corner of it. The Fort Portal region sits at the heart of one of Uganda's most scenic landscapes, with over 50 crater lakes dotted across the hills. Over four hours, this experience gives you access to that landscape at the pace it deserves. You start on the water, paddling across Lake Mwamba while your guide points out kingfishers, turacos, and the kind of stillness that is hard to find anywhere else. From there you hike up to the "Top of the World" viewpoint, where you get a sweeping aerial view of all the craters at once, before finishing at a local vanilla farm for a guided community walk and a taste of what this region actually grows and produces. It is a genuinely full morning or afternoon that combines soft adventure, incredible birdwatching, and the kind of access to local life that you simply cannot replicate from a lodge. The dry seasons from June through September and December through February offer the calmest waters, but this lake is beautiful year round.
