Lake Kivu Night and Dawn Fishing Experience

About this Experience

The Lake Kivu Traditional Fishing Experience offers visitors an authentic journey into one of Rwanda's most cherished living traditions. Practiced on the tranquil waters of Lake Kivu for more than 70 years, this unique cultural experience showcases the remarkable teamwork, resilience, and heritage of local fishing communities. The adventure centers on the traditional Three-boat formation, where wooden boats are securely connected and paddled in perfect rhythm while fishermen sing inspiring traditional songs that coordinate their movements and strengthen their spirit throughout the journey. The fishermen target Tanganyika sardine (Isambaza), using lanterns at night to attract insects, which in turn attract schools of fish to the surface for catching with traditional lift nets. While commercial night fishing was introduced during the colonial period, the distinctive alignment of the three boats is believed to have been inspired by the war boats of King Kigeli IV Rwabugiri in the late nineteenth century, reflecting Rwanda's long tradition of unity and cooperation on the water. Visitors can choose between two unforgettable experiences the Night Fishing Experience or the Dawn Fishing Experience each offering its own unique atmosphere and unforgettable memories. The Night Fishing Experience begins as the sun sets over the breathtaking waters of Lake Kivu, creating one of Rwanda's most spectacular evening landscapes. Guests board the traditional fishing boats at approximately 4:30 p.m., enjoying a peaceful cruise while watching the golden colors of sunset transform into a star-filled African night. Depending on the selected package, the experience concludes around 6:30 p.m. or extends until 8:30 p.m., allowing visitors to spend more time with the fishermen as they prepare their lanterns, cast their traditional lift nets, and sing the rhythmic songs that have echoed across Lake Kivu for generations. The glow of dozens of lanterns reflected on the calm lake, accompanied by the harmonious voices of the fishermen, creates a magical atmosphere unlike any other. Guests gain a deeper appreciation of traditional fishing techniques, community cooperation, and the cultural heritage that continues to sustain families living along the shores of Lake Kivu. For early risers, the Dawn Fishing Experience provides an equally extraordinary adventure, beginning at 4:00 a.m. before first light and concluding around 7:00 a.m. As visitors join the fishermen on the lake in complete darkness, they witness the final moments of the night's fishing before welcoming one of the most beautiful sunrises in Rwanda. Watching the first rays of sunlight emerge above the surrounding hills while traditional boats glide across the peaceful water creates an unforgettable and deeply moving experience. As the fishermen return to shore with their catch of fresh Isambaza, visitors also witness another essential part of the tradition the lively connection between the fishing community and local fish vendors waiting at the landing site. The morning fish market becomes a vibrant meeting place where the night's harvest is sold, supporting local families and sustaining the regional economy. This seamless relationship between fishermen, traders, and the wider community demonstrates how Lake Kivu's traditional fishing heritage is not only a cultural treasure but also a vital source of livelihoods that continues to unite generations through cooperation, commerce, and shared identity.
